After defeating Morgott, you’ll quickly realize that the wall of thorns remains a formidable obstacle. To overcome it, you must journey to the arena and rest at the newly accessible Site of Grace.
It’s here that Melina will make her appearance, informing you that the only way to destroy the wall is by setting it ablaze. But to do so, you must undertake a dangerous journey to the Mountaintop of the Giants.
This is no easy feat, as the mountain is home to some of the deadliest creatures in Elden Ring. But with determination and skill, you can reach the mountaintop, gather the necessary resources, and finally burn the wall of thorns, clearing the way to your ultimate goal.
The Grand Lift of Rold
After speaking with Melina and learning of the journey to the Mountaintop of the Giants, you’ll be pleased to know that a new red marker will appear on your map, indicating the Rold Route that leads to the Grand Lift of Rold.
To help you on your journey, Melina will give you the Rold Medallion, which is essential for activating the Grand Lift and reaching the mountaintop.
This stage of the game offers a great balance of adventure and linearity, as the main story provides a clear path to follow but also allows for plenty of side activities and exploration. Finding the Rold Route may seem daunting, but don’t worry; we’re here to help make the journey smoother for you. There are several Sites of Grace in the vicinity, but the quickest and easiest path to the Rold Route is by starting at the Avenue Balcony Site of Grace.
The path from here is straightforward and will involve facing fewer enemies, assuming you choose to engage in combat. By taking this route, you’ll be able to reach your destination more efficiently, allowing you to focus on what’s truly important: your quest to reach the Mountaintop of the Giants and burn the wall of thorns.
When you arrive at the Avenue Balcony Site of Grace, simply ascend the stairs nearby and turn left. The path ahead is straightforward and will eventually lead you to a set of large doors. These doors should open after your victory over Morgott, allowing you to pass through.
As you proceed, be cautious. Ahead of you, there will be a set of stairs, several smaller enemies and a more formidable foe lurking in the back. It’s easy to become surrounded and overwhelmed, so we recommend taking things slow and engaging the enemies one at a time.
Doing so can avoid getting overwhelmed and ensure that you come out on top. Don’t be afraid to use magic to help even the odds, and show those enemies who’s boss!
After defeating the enemies on the staircase, continue up and turn left. You will then come across an archway with statues on either side. Congratulations, you have arrived at your destination.
To activate the lift of the Rold Route and reach the Mountaintop of the Giants, use the Rold Medallion you received from Melina. This will initiate your ascent to the top, where the wall of thorns awaits.
The Rold Route will bring you to the Grand Lift of Rold, which is the actual lift that will take you to the Mountaintop of the Giants. Get ready for a thrilling ascent as you make your way to the top and face the next stage of your journey.
Mountaintop of the Giants
The Mountaintop of the Giants was once the domain of the Giants, but now it lies in ruins after their war with the Erdtree. The Giants’ frozen corpses litter the peak, while the only living beings nearby are the Fire Monks. Explore this desolate yet fascinating location as you move forward in your journey.
Once you exit the Grand Lift of Rold, follow the path forward until you come across a stone monument on your right. Interact with the monument to obtain the map fragment, which will be an important item as you continue your journey.
Your main goal in the Mountaintop of the Giants is fighting the Fire Giant to progress to the Forge of the Giants. The Fire Giant is a legendary creature found in the Mountaintop of the Giants. It is said to be the last surviving member of the Giants after a devastating war against the Erdtree.
The Fire Giant worshipped the One-Eyed/Fell God and was a target of Queen Marika, who feared the “flame of ruin” capable of burning down the Erdtree. It is believed that Marika killed the Fire Giant’s god and cursed it to guard the forge for eternity. The Fire Giant is a massive humanoid with a face on its chest, making it an intimidating and awe-inspiring presence in the game.
The Forge of the Giants is located on the Mountaintops of the Giants and is guarded by the last remaining Fire Giant. To reach the Forge, head south from the Grand Lift of Rold and watch for higher ground.
You will eventually spot a giant cauldron next to a mountain shaped like a ramp. Climb to the top of the mountain and use the frozen chain as a bridge to reach the cauldron. Once you are there, you have finally arrived at the legendary Forge of the Giants.
It is suggested that you complete NPC quests in the area and such since after resting at the Site of Grace, the world will change, and some NPCs, like Brother Corhyn will be locked.
When you reach the Forge of the Giants, avoid exploring its center as it will lead to instant death. Talk to Melina at the Site of Grace and she will ask if you are ready to commit a Cardinal Sin. If you accept, you will be transported to Crumbling Farum Azula after a series of cutscenes.
The Sin in question is burning down the Erdtree and using Melina as the sacrifice. This is a monumental stage of the game and your second-last dive into the endgame content.
If you have interacted with the Three Fingers, talking to Melina at the Forge of the Giants Site of Grace is unnecessary.
