What is League of Legends?

“League of Legends,” or LoL, for short, emerged back in 2012, and since then, it has been labeled the most played game. For over half a decade now, Riot Games, the creators of LoL has been in control over the online gaming scene. If you call yourself a gamer, then I’m sure you’re familiar with League of Legends. For those who are not familiar with MOBAS, League of Legends may seem a bit complicated and I’m going to admit, there’s a steep learning curve, but with a little bit of practice, it’s something you can get good at.

What is League of Legends?

League of Legends is categorized in the MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) genre, but it has a variety of genre elements. Typically, MOBAS have RTS (real-time strategy), components throughout the game. But if you pack it all up in a nutshell, LoL can be described as a MOBA that has two teams, five players on each team, who go up against each other and they both have the same objective in mind. MOBA’s , like LoL, will often require more strategy and dexterity than trigger finger reactions that are lightning-fast. If you want to get better at League, here are some good LoL tips

How Do You Play LoL?

League of Legends is an in depth game, so only pick it up if you don’t mind playing a game that has a steep learning curve. On the bad days, it is a frustrating game, but on the good days, it is super fun. Familiarize yourself with each champion and organize some strategies – this is a daunting task, but well worth it. League of Legends has remained at the top and one of the main reasons for this is because it is an ever-changing game that constantly receives updates.

LoL Champion Categories

In League of Legends, there are a total of six categories for champions. Below, you will find a list of those categories:

  • Fighters/Bruisers – These types of champions are capable of dealing and taking a whole lot of damage. The fighters do a great job in extended battles.
  • Assassins – These are the champions who are capable of quickly moving and dealing a large amount of damage to one target. It’s best that these champions are used for quick fights as they jump out to safety.
  • Marksmen  – This type of champion is best to use for dealing damage at a distance.
  • Mages – Like Marksmen, mages are best when used from a distance. If the mage is well protected, then it will be able to deal a large amount of damage.
  • Support – Support champions have a main role and that is the amplify the abilities and strengths of the team.
  • Tank – A lot like the fighter champion, tanks are best when used as a “damage sponge.”

Regardless of the class, each champion will have a combination of abilities, along with one perk they can use in order to create a unique combination.  League of Legends has a lot of information that needs to be taken in and this can leave new players with an uneasy feeling. Veteran players who have thousands of hours under their belts should d understand how each champion plays, which champions are best selections for a match, and a good understanding of the mechanics of the game. Before jumping in and just putting five players together on a team in LoL, there is a lot that should be considered. Each champion and player will have their role and that role needs to be perfectly performed in order for it to work out.

The Main Objective of League of Legends

Destroying enemy structures, like turrets, is one of the main goals in League of Legends. The turrets are capable of dealing  a lot of damage towards a champion is they remain within turret range. When a player attacks an enemy champion under an enemy turret, they will be the new target for that turret. When a player is attacking a turret, they need to have as many minions attacking as they can possibly get. If a team manages to destroy an enemy’s inhibitor, a super minion will be granted for five minutes.

Leveling Up on League of Legends

In order to keep up with the fight against the enemy team, your champion will need to level up in each match. Leveling up is going to require experience, which can be gained from getting kills. When you kill a minion, you will gain a little bit of experience, but killing an enemy champion will give you much more. In the early stages of the match, it is important that you farm minions as this is the best way to gain both experience and gold. As you gain more gold and experience, you can put it towards leveling you your abilities or purchasing items. Experience is shared between the surrounding champions that are near a kill, but not for gold. Gold will only be shared between players who recently got the kill (or an exist) on an enemy champion, or on tower platings.  “Last hitting” Is a fundamental skill in League of Legends and it is a skill that you should develop.

What is League of Legends Gold

When you have gold, you can use it to buy items that will grant champions bonuses. Mind you, there are different bonuses that can affect champions, like a temporary shield, or passive armor boosts.  In League of Legends, there are over 200 items and knowing the right “build” can take a b it of time. If you’re a new player, you’re in luck, because the game offers recommendations and hints for item builds. There are literally thousands of build strategies, but it is important that you select the right one for your play style, especially if you want to succeed. The build strategy your friend uses that works wonders for him may work for him, but it may not do the same for you.

What is League of Legends Lane Control

In League of Legends, it is important that lane control is established. If there is a champion who is not establishing control over their lane, then that champion is going to fall behind in leveling. Lane control can be established by killing enemies and minions, defending turrets and structures, and by leveling up. If a champion clears and controls a lane, they will have a direct line of sight towards the enemy’s base.

Between each lane, there is an area called the jungle. In the jungle, you can find monster camps that spawn monsters every couple of minute. As a jungler, your job would be to destroy those monsters because  they provide buffs for the individual champions or the entire team. Killing these monsters at the right time is always a game changer.

What is League of Legends Dragons?

The dragon feature is difficult to understand, especially for new players. Once upon a time, the dragon was once a way for the team to gain a lot of gold every couple of minutes. Now, times have changed and there is a chance the dragon will spawn with one of fur elements. Every element will supply a different buff, such as bonus movement speed with Air, or health regeneration with Ocean. Every time aa dragon spawns, teams will try to kill the dragon for those bonuses. After a team has killed enough dragons, they will get the dragon soul, which will give the dragons buff for the remainder of the match. When this happens, the next dragon that spawns will be the Elder Dragon. The Elder dragon has an execute that is attached to it, which means that if you get an enemy to a certain health point, they will automatically die.

What is League of Legends Baron Pit?

The Baron Pit is the other major objective. In the Baron Pit, there are two objectives, with one being the Rift Herald.. This is a boss that spawns approximately every eight minutes and as long as players kill the boss within 13:45 (in-game time), the boss can spawn again. When players kill the boss, it will drop an eye, which you can use to spawn in a friendly Herald that will charge at enemy towers and deal a large amount of damage.

The other monster that resides in the Baron Pit would be the Baron Nasher. This monster will give all players on the team who managed to get the last hit on Baron a powerful buff like no other. This buff will increase the total amount of AP, AD an aura that buffs nearby minions as well as a four-second recall. This buff will last for a total of three minutes, or until killed.  These three objectives I just mentioned is why it is important that you have a good jungler and work together to get those buffs.

Who are the Best Players in League of Legends?

Now that I have answered your “what is League of Legends” questions, I am going to move forward and introduce you to the best players in League of  Legends. Now, there are numerous players who face that popular fan-fatigue that professional NFL or NBA players experience. While Lebron may be considered the best basketball player to ever set foot on the court, you have other basketball fans who may think otherwise. As esports continues to become popular, fan opinions and views are going to weigh heavily on players.

Ruler – When thinking about one of the best marksman players in the world,  my mind goes to Gen.G’s Park “Ruler” Ja-Hyuk. This is a former world champion who was n Samsung’s World winning roster back in 2017.Since that team rebranded to Gen.G, Ruler has been their top players. Gen. G successfully made it to Worlds 2020 after a brief absence and Ruler seems to be just as deadly, if not deadlier, than he was back in 2017.

Faker – Lee “Faker” Sang-Hyeok players for T1. Faker is popular for his technical gameplay along with being able to play almost every champion flawlessly. Fake it one of the only players, along with his old teammate Bae “Bengi” Seong-ung, to have won the world championship for a total of three times. In 2018, T1 offered an unprecedented contract to faker that would keep him on the team. Fake is part owner of the T1 organization and after all these years, is still an active player in the team.

Knight – This is a star that is headed to take Faker’s place, but as good as he may be, I’m not quite sure if that’s ever going to happen. Knight is literally a knight in shining armor and is the top on his team. He’s the LPL Summer Split MVP with seven first-place accolades. It’s been ages since we have witnessed a player like this.

What are League of Legends Biggest Events and/or Tournaments?

World Championships – The League of Legends World Championships takes place yearly and it is a professional championship that is hosted by Riot Games. At the end of every season, teams gather to compete in the championship for the title, the 1 million dollar championship check, and the 70-pound Summoner’s Cup. Back in 2017, there were over 60 million people who watched the championship, while the previous year’s record was 50 million.

MSI – The Mid-Season Invitational is a League of Legends tournament that is held yearly and has been around each year since 2015. This is the second most important tournament of the year, sitting next to the World Championship. Mid-Season Invitational marks the half point of the season. This tournament features five of the major competitive teams from each league, along with a wildcard team that comes from a lesser-known region.
